NEW Ambassador : Devon Hollway Demint

Hi, I'm Devon.

I'm a writer and surfer. I quit may job last June to follow my heart and do both. Was it crazy? Probably, but it was just something I needed to do.

I've taken a journal with me everywhere since I saw Harriet the Spy in 6th grade and I've been in love with the ocean my whole life.

As an adult, I identified surfing and writing to be my favorite forms of self-expression, so it only made sense to write about surfing. I'm fascinated by words that perfectly describe feelings and I'm captivated by waves that help you demonstrate those feelings. Sand and eraser shavings seem to follow me around.

I was born and raised in Orange County, California, but now my husband Scott and I call San Diego home. We live in a sleepy beach town down the street from my parents. If the air grows quiet and the waves grow big, which isn't that often, we can hear the ocean. On days when the wind blows from the south we could probably even hear my parents. This is the way we like it. We live in a small community, but dream about big adventures.

We love to travel to uncommon places to find uncrowded waves. In all my travels I have found that the best adventures in life are the ones you least expect.

Devon is a sponsored surfer, well followed blogger and writer, and Daphne's newest brand ambassador!  Stay tuned as she shares with us her healthy eating habits, active lifestyle tips, and continuous travel adventures.

HAPPY STRAWBERRY!

Strawberries are a flavorful treat. Not only are they sweet, go great with tasty deserts and add fun flavor to your salad (think Daphne’s Summer Strawberry Chicken Salad), but they are also full of nutritional value. Here are a few fun facts and great examples of how strawberries can perk up your day!

Nutritional Benefits of the Strawberry

The tiny strawberry is packed with vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants, and more.

The heart-shaped silhouette of the strawberry is the first clue that this fruit is good for you. These potent little packages protect your heart, increase HDL (good) cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, and guard against cancer.

Packed with vitamins, fiber, and particularly high levels of antioxidants known as polyphenols, strawberries are a sodium-free, fat-free, cholesterol-free, low-calorie food. They are among the top 20 fruits in antioxidant capacity and are a good source of manganese and potassium. Just one serving -- about eight strawberries -- provides more vitamin C than an orange.

This member of the rose family isn’t really a fruit or a berry, but are the enlarged receptacle of the flower. Choose medium-sized berries that are firm, plump, and deep red; once picked, they don’t ripen further. First cultivated in ancient Rome, strawberries are now the most popular berry fruit in the world. In provincial France, they were regarded as an aphrodisiac. These red gems may be good for your heart in more ways than one.

Want to EAT WELL and LIVE WELL? A Mediterranean Diet can help.

Why the Mediterranean Diet can help you... Eat well. Live well.

The world-famous Mayo Clinic has an excellent summary of the Mediterranean diet online and Daphne's California Greek can help anyone implement elements of this eating plan easily and painlessly.

According to mayoclinic.com, "[Most] if not all major scientific organizations encourage healthy adults to adapt a style of eating like that of the Mediterranean diet for prevention of major chronic diseases..." A recent study involving 1.5 million healthy adults showed that a Mediterranean diet, "was associated with a reduced risk of overall and cardiovascular mortality, a reduced incidence of cancer and cancer mortality, and a reduced incidence of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases."

The best part about a Mediterranean diet is that it's healthy without being restrictive, boring, or difficult to understand. Think flavorful fish and poultry, bright herbs and spice, whole grains, nuts, yogurt, olive oil, red wine... Spend less time with red meat, butter, lard, salt etc. and concentrate on building your meals around plant-based foods -- rather than an outsized lump of fatty meat!

The diet does not limit total fat consumption but it's very important to make wise choices: Avoid hydrogenated oils (trans-fats) and saturated fats. Daphne's menu items and cooking oils are all trans-fat free, with the exception of naturally-occurring trans-fats. And we never use MSG, preferring to coax out natural flavors with herbs, spices, and appropriate cooking techniques.

A few Daphne's menu favorites that typify the Mediterranean diet:

Classic Falafel Pita $5.99, 510 cal

Fire-Roasted Vegetables $1.69, 50 cal

Premium Hummus & Multigrain Pita Chips $1.49 290-360 cal

Rustic Greek Flatbread Pizza $5.69, 460 cal

Grilled Salmon Plate $11.49, 330 cal (+sides)

Three-Course Dinner (w/ Premium Hummus & Multigrain Pita Chips; Grilled Chicken Kabob & Lemon Chicken Soup; Fire-Roasted Vegetables; Tabouli; Caramel Pecan Dessert) $8.99, 820-890 cal

Aside from being easy to follow and very, very tasty, the Mediterranean diet emphasizes getting plenty or exercise and of enjoying your meals with family and friends. Nowhere does the diet suggest "watching more reality TV" or "eating alone in your car in the office parking lot."

Food for thought...

Pose + Purpose: Malasana

This month's pose + purpose is malasana, or Garland pose. While this posture may appear to be easy, it can actually be a hard one to master, especially for those with tight Achille's Tendons. This deep squat is a wonderful hip opener and for some, it maybe even a little bit of a balancing exercise. Garland pose provides a deep stretch for the calves, lower back, and groin but please avoid it if you feel any discomfort in the knees. In yoga, we only want to feel the stretch in our muscles, never our joints.
To access Garland pose, start by standing with feet as wide as your mat. Bend your knees and come into a deep squat. You might notice that your heels lift off the ground in order to achieve this, if so, roll up a towel and place under your heels for added stability. Take your arms to inside of your knees. Palms come together for prayer position, and use your elbows to gently press your thighs more open. As you do this, open your chest to create one long line of energy from the top of your head down to your tailbone. To take the pose a little deeper, press your heels down, work your feet parallel to one another, and carefully move your feet closer together. Once settled into the pose, refocus on your breathe for 30 seconds or more. When ready to leave Garland pose, slowly release your hands to the floor, gently begin to straighten your knees, and roll up to standing.
