An Island Within An Island: The North Shore’s food evolution
Posted By: Chris Cote

When I first started going to Oahu’s North Shore 15 or so years ago, food was limited to a small, pleasantly ghetto market called Kammies, which had a Laundromat and a little take-out pizza joint next door. Kammies had some fresh items, but mostly canned food and frozen dinners. The pizza place was hit or miss, and as a young white grommet, the clientele was slightly terrifying. Nowadays, the North Shore has gone through quite a food transformation. When I say “North Shore,” I’m talking about the general area between Waimea and Sunset Beach—the little island within the island.
When on the North Shore you’ll most likely be travelling by bike or foot so luckily, the little zone that surrounds such famous breaks as Pipeline, Rocky Point, Off The Wall, and Sunset have more dining options than ever and food trucks are the main attraction. A local favorite is Impossibles Pizza, an epic pizza truck that never seems to be in the same spot twice—finding it is part of the fun. A new truck that just popped up is called, Dat Cajun Guy—the Cajun style shrimp plate I got from this truck was fantastic! If you see this truck on the North Shore, pull over and get a plate (they even take credit cards which is rare). Another truck that has since been made permanent is Shark’s Cove, which has a nice little seating area and is right across the street from a killer little beach. Don’t expect amazing service, but do expect a wonderful lunch vibe with a picnic style dining experience.
If you find yourself starving after a long day on the beach at Pipeline, or just slightly bored and a little bit hungry, I highly advise grabbing a bike and sampling some North Shore style food—you can’t truly experience the North Shore without a trip to a food truck.

EAT WELL. LIVE WELL. Ethan Pringle

Born and raised in the Mission District of San Francisco, Ethan Pringle was introduced to the wonders of nature before he could even walk. At a young age Hockey held is interest, with every waking moment devoted to the rink—that is until his curiosity led him into a climbing gym on a casual walk home from practice… clearly there was an instant connection and Pringle quickly traded in his skates for carabiners and a climbing harness. With an impressive list of climbing accolades along with big-name sponsors, his passion has taken him around the globe to some of the most challenging rock climbs and in competitions against the sport's best climbers.
EAT WELL. "I
am a true believer that breakfast is the most important meal of the
day, especially since I don't get very hungry while I'm focused on
climbing. I've been in France, so my morning routine consists of yogurt
with muesli, banana, dates and passion fruit. I'm a bit of a fruit bat
and I'd say passion fruit is one of my favorites. I also drink lots of
water…we're talking 1/2-1 liter per hour when i'm out climbing. My
sessions either end when I run out of day light or when I run out of
water... whichever comes first."
LIVE WELL. "Obviously my main activity is rock climbing and I'll do that
until my body just can't handle it anymore, which I'm hoping is still a
long ways off. I play some basketball when I'm at home at the park
across the street from my house and I am obsessed with surfing. I try to
get out in the water as much as I can when the waves are decent, but I
am really not very good and divide my time in the water between trying
not to look like a total idiot and staying out of people's way. However,
when I can manage to catch some waves it's so addictive and the perfect
cross-training for climbing (all upper body strength and balance).
Being pushed by a wave is the best or second best feeling ever... second
only to clipping the chains/topping out your project. For me, it's also
important to keep the brain well exercised so a good, entertaining
novel is perfect when I'm on the road."

Take A Hike!

Clear your mind, give your heart a workout and soak up all the benefits of the great outdoors!
We've done the research for you and discovered Briones Regional Park in Walnut Creek, California. With endless trails of rolling, grassy hills and secluded, shady canyons, this "secret wilderness" is the epicenter for hiking enthusiasts of all levels on the Central Coast. And after that 1 mile, 5 mile or 15 mile hike, take your appetite to Daphne's which is just 5 miles away!
Not enough to lace up? Here are 5 benefits of taking your workout to the wilderness:
1. Helps Prevent Osteoporosis - Hiking is a weight-bearing exercise which protects the bones. Moreover, being outside in the sunshine provides vitamin D which acts as another bone-healthy ingredient.
2. Cardiovascular Strength - The constant up and down of hiking provides an aerobic exercise that gives your heart one heck of a workout.
3. Reduces LDL (Bad Cholesterol) - Both uphill and downhill hiking reduces LDL. Surprisingly, that "easy" hike downhill is actually twice as effective as uphill hiking at removing blood sugars and improving glucose tolerance.
4. Mental Health - A little nature does the mind good. Research suggests that hiking around a scenic, natural environment improves mental and emotional health such as depression and self-esteem.
5. It's FREE - Ditch your gym's treadmill and hit the trail with T H I S site to help you take advantage of the surroundings wherever you are.

Jujubes

Have you ever tried a jujube? No, I am not talking about the candies, I am talking about the fruit. If not, don’t fret because I was only introduced to them this year myself! Jujubes come from small trees and resemble miniature apples. In fact, I think they taste a little bit like caramel apples. Although this fruit may not be particularly well known, it has some very unique and amazing attributes.
Surprisingly enough, some studies are showing jujubes to have medicinal qualities, such as the capability to prevent ulcers, dry skin, diarrhea, liver disease, anxiety, and insomnia. The farmer I bought my jujubes from even claimed that Jujubes have the potential to balance the nervous system and regulate hormones.
Now that we all know jujubes are great for our health, let’s talk about all the ways we can eat them. I prefer to just eat mine raw, like an apple. If you really want to bring out the flavor, boil the jujubes in water, squeeze in some lemon and add a bit of local honey to enjoy as a tea. I've also heard that you can bake with them, eat them as dried fruit snacks, or toss them in stews. Take a trip to your local farmers market, get creative in the kitchen and reap all of the amazing health benefits of jujubes!
