NEW Ambassador : Devon Hollway Demint

Hi, I'm Devon.
I'm a writer and surfer. I quit may job last June to follow my heart and do both. Was it crazy? Probably, but it was just something I needed to do.
I've taken a journal with me everywhere since I saw Harriet the Spy in 6th grade and I've been in love with the ocean my whole life.
As an adult, I identified surfing and writing to be my favorite forms of self-expression, so it only made sense to write about surfing. I'm fascinated by words that perfectly describe feelings and I'm captivated by waves that help you demonstrate those feelings. Sand and eraser shavings seem to follow me around.
I was born and raised in Orange County, California, but now my husband Scott and I call San Diego home. We live in a sleepy beach town down the street from my parents. If the air grows quiet and the waves grow big, which isn't that often, we can hear the ocean. On days when the wind blows from the south we could probably even hear my parents. This is the way we like it. We live in a small community, but dream about big adventures.
We love to travel to uncommon places to find uncrowded waves. In all my travels I have found that the best adventures in life are the ones you least expect.
Devon is a sponsored surfer, well followed blogger and writer, and Daphne's newest brand ambassador! Stay tuned as she shares with us her healthy eating habits, active lifestyle tips, and continuous travel adventures.

Genai Kerr: Olympic Recap
Posted By: Daphne's

With the rush and excitement of the Olympics over, I can now reflect on the entire experience from a much calmer perspective. It was, and always is, an honor to watch these incredible athletes compete. But I wonder if people really know what goes into making an elite athlete an Olympian, and what makes an Olympian a gold, silver or bronze medal winner. As we watched in these Games, the difference between the gold and silver can be as little as 1/100 of a second, or a goal in the final seconds.
I can personally attest to the fact that mental preparation plays a much bigger part in performance than the physical preparation. Elite athletes can all only train so many hours of the day before their bodies need to recover. Once you get to the Olympic level everyone is physically dominant in their sport. The true champions emerge by being mentally prepared to excel.
And as new Brand Ambassador for Daphne’s, I also watched how the athletes fueled themselves in London. The Olympics might be the sports world's biggest stage, but it’s quite possibly the world’s biggest buffet. Athletes had an expansive choice of foods from around the world -- Italian, Mexican, Greek, Lebanese, Thai, American, Indonesian, and more. But these athletes know that to recover both mentally and physically from the day’s challenges, they must eat to compete, nourishing their bodies with the most efficient fuel possible.
So future Olympians, fuel your body and your mind. Prepare yourself for success.

GENAI KERR CHECKS IN FROM LONDON

U.S. Olympian and Daphne’s California Greek Brand Ambassador Genai Kerr checks in with Romanian Olympic water polo team at the 2012 London Games.
The Olympics have always been a special event in my life. As a child, I would dream about what it would be like to be the best in the world -- imagining winning countless gold medals and standing shoulder-to-shoulder on the podium with the world’s top athletes.
Yet, it was not until college that I developed a very specific plan of action that would allow me to achieve my goals of becoming an Olympian. I was then set on a course that would include years and years of preparation and training with some of the most talented and dedicated athletes and coaches from around the country and the world.
To this day, I am still overwhelmed by the fact that I was part of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team in Athens. The sense of pride is almost impossible to explain. But you can see it, feel it, almost taste it at the 2012 London Games. Surrounded by thousands of athletes, I again feel the intensity of excitement and pride of representing your country on the world stage.
It’s been an honor to watch and be among this year’s incredible lineup of athletes.
More to come from London…

HAPPY STRAWBERRY!

Strawberries are a flavorful treat. Not only are they sweet, go great with tasty deserts and add fun flavor to your salad (think Daphne’s Summer Strawberry Chicken Salad), but they are also full of nutritional value. Here are a few fun facts and great examples of how strawberries can perk up your day!
Nutritional Benefits of the Strawberry
The tiny strawberry is packed with vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants, and more.
The heart-shaped silhouette of the strawberry is the first clue that this fruit is good for you. These potent little packages protect your heart, increase HDL (good) cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, and guard against cancer.
Packed with vitamins, fiber, and particularly high levels of antioxidants known as polyphenols, strawberries are a sodium-free, fat-free, cholesterol-free, low-calorie food. They are among the top 20 fruits in antioxidant capacity and are a good source of manganese and potassium. Just one serving -- about eight strawberries -- provides more vitamin C than an orange.
This member of the rose family isn’t really a fruit or a berry, but are the enlarged receptacle of the flower. Choose medium-sized berries that are firm, plump, and deep red; once picked, they don’t ripen further. First cultivated in ancient Rome, strawberries are now the most popular berry fruit in the world. In provincial France, they were regarded as an aphrodisiac. These red gems may be good for your heart in more ways than one.

CHA CHA CHA CHIA!
Posted By: Daphne's
Categories: EAT WELL

No, not the terra-cotta, hair growing, pointless house plants retired (for good reason) long ago from those 1995 infomercials. Well yes, we are actually speaking of the same seed, however researchers have discovered a far better role that have the health-conscious buzzing about nutritional benefits exceeding it's fuzzy past. And lucky for us, the Central American native is now conveniently located at your local grocer.
1. Energy Boost - Although the miniscule seed may not look like very sustaining, when mixed with water, the seeds expand creating a porridge-like consistency helping you feel fuller longer while simultaneously providing surges of energy during and after workouts. Chia seeds are great for athletes and marathon runners in particular now swear by them!
2. Nutritional Powerhouse - Again, don't let size fool you, as servings of this seed pack in more omega 3's than salmon, more calcium than milk, more potassium than bananas, 2 times the protein of any other grain, and an excellent source of fiber. Oh and not to mention, chia is gluten free which makes this grain ideal for everyone!
3. Blood Sugar Regulator - If you have diabetes, chia can keep that blood sugar level in balance. Because the seeds contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, and have the ability to absorb water, this together helps slow down your body's transformation of starch into sugar.

POWERFUL COMBINATIONS
Posted By: Daphne's
Categories: EAT WELL, lemon, Menu

We all know that fruits, vegetables, dark chocolates, legumes and protein have their benefits individually, but did you know that when paired with specific foods, those benefits get even better?
The list is endless, but here are 5 powerful combinations that will REALLY do the body good.
Kidney Beans + Green Bell Pepper - For those who are cutting down on red meat you may think legumes and beans are the perfect iron-packed alternative. Problem is, only 2 to 20% of plant iron is actually absorbed by the body. Solution? The powerful vitamin C of green bell pepper forces your body to take in more of the mineral and increases absorption six-fold!
Oatmeal + Orange Juice - Drinking vitamin C rich OJ while enjoying a bowl of non processed oatmeal cleanses your arteries and prevents heart attacks with two times as much effectiveness than if you were to ingest either breakfast staple alone. The organic compounds in both foods stabilize LDL "bad" cholesterol when consumed together.
Apples + Chocolate - Red apples are known to be high in anti-inflammatory flavonoids called quercetin. Chocolate contain the flavonoid catechin which acts as an antioxidant that reduces the risk for cancer and atherosclerosis. When paired together, these two powerhouses loosen clumpy blood platelets to improve cardiovascular health and provide anticoagulant activity.
Kale + Lemon - Vitamin C help make plant based iron more absorbable. When Lemon mixes with kale, the vitamin C actually converts much of the plant-based iron into a form that is similar to what is found in fish and red meats.
Red Meat + Rosemary - We've all heard of the harmful carcinogens that produce when grilling over an open flame, but adding a little herb can actually temper the cancer-causing effects.
Rosemary contains the antioxidants rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid and lowers the amount of those cancer causing carcinogens that appear in charred meats. The hardy herb literally soaks up the meat's dangerous free radicals.
