YogaBabes + Blood Oranges

Posted By: YogaBabes
Categories: benefits of blood oranges, blood oranges, Daphne's California Greek, EAT WELL, healthy living, Healthy Living, Live Well, where to find blood oranges, YogaBabes, YogaBabes

Good news- blood oranges are back in season here in sunny California! A great majority of these oranges come from the Mediterranean so take advantage of the local harvest .You may already love blood oranges for their amazing flavor, but they provide some wonderful health benefits as well.

This vibrant citrus fruit contains high amounts of ascorbic acid (aka vitamin C). Vitamin C helps boost our collagen production (think great skin), supports our immune system, and may even reduce strokes.

Unlike other citrus though, blood oranges have anthocyanins, which have amazing antioxidant properties. Why do we love antioxidants? They fight those pesky free radicals (think cancer fighting abilities).

Blood Orange tips and tricks:

1. Store your blood oranges in the fridge—they can last up to two weeks.
2. They contain fiber, especially if you eat some of the white fleshy part that is found right underneath the skin.
3. When picking blood oranges, look for those that are firm and heavy for their size.

ENJOY!

Rather than the typical bouquet of flowers, expensive dinner and that heart-shaped box of chocolates, get both your hearts pumping (literally!) on one of these outdoor, active Valentine’s dates… then maybe add on that bouquet of flowers, dinner and chocolates to score some bonus points with your valentine!

Partner Yoga
Partner Yoga postures utilize the forms and principles of individual postures while incorporating the presence of another to deepen the impact of the pose. Both partners are fully engaged and reaping many benefits just as traditional yoga like balance, strength and flexibility.
Estimated calories burned per hour: 300 depending on level of exertion and weight.

Rock Climbing
An exhilarating and challenging sport that can be enjoyed almost anywhere! Besides the obvious health benefits related to climbing (improved cardiovascular health and full-boyd muscle toning), the outdoor or indoor sport is great for communication between you and your valentine or (in rock climbing terms) climber and belayer.
Estimated calories burned per hour: 400 depending on level of exertion and weight.

Stand Up Paddleboarding
Improve your balance and strengthen major muscle groups (shoulders, arms, legs, back and core) and soak up some vitamin D during this water workout!
Estimated calories burned per hour: 250 to 1000 depending on level of exertion and weight.

Tandem Bike
Strengthen the bond, teamwork and endurance with your significant other on this double workout on wheels.
Tip: Put the stronger rider up front to for all of the shifting, steering, braking, and heavy pedaling.
Calories burned per hour: up to 500 depending on level of exertion and weight.

Daphne’s Team Rider Josh Benjoya is on our radar this month and with only 15 years of living under his belt he’s already building quite the resume with NSSA, WSA and CSF competition placings. Here’s what we learned when we sat down for a quick Q & A with this Dana Point, CA local.

D. What has been your biggest accomplishment in the past 15 years?
J. My biggest accomplishment would probably have to be getting a 4.0 GPA in 6th and 7th grade.

D. If you could be a pro athlete in any sport besides surfing, what would it be?
J. Basketball

D. What is your best subject in school?
J. Math

D. What is your go-to snack to fuel up before a contest?
J. I will usually just grab water, a banana and a granola bar.

D. How do you EAT WELL, LIVE WELL?
J. My Mom is an excellent cook and she makes us great meals all the time, but she also works full time so sometimes we go out. Daphne's has been a perfect fit for our family. I live well by exercising two times a week with DSC Performance (a surf specific training program that helps you with all things surfing). I also enjoy basketball, skateboarding, surfing of course and spending good times with my friends and family.
